Cadets from the Woodbridge High School Viking Battalion in Woodbridge, Virginia recently performed a valuable public service as part of their Service Learning Project.
The Viking Battalion has previously helped place wreaths on the graves of veterans at the National Memorial Cemetery in Quantico, Virginia, in connection with the nonprofit organization, Wreaths Across America.
This year, the cadets switched it up by helping to collect the wreaths from the gravesites and then safely disposing of them. Woodbridge High School cadets woke up bright and early, loaded onto a bus at the high school, then headed over to the National Cemetery, working together as a unit to retrieve the wreaths.
“As I was picking up the wreaths, I saw the names and religions of many veterans,” said Cadet Gabrielles Jones. “It really showed me how diverse the military is, and how anyone from any background can serve.”
The Viking Battalion learned so much from this new experience and plan to continue to carry out these types of projects each year to gain new insights and perspectives.
“Going out and doing this service is saying ‘thank you’ to these veterans,” said Cadet Sophia Atiki.
