The Denbigh High School JROTC Patriot Staff had the honor of visiting the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia on Nov. 15, 2024. This educational excursion provided cadets with an unparalleled opportunity to explore the rich history of the U.S. Army and deepen their understanding of its role in shaping the nation.
The museum, located just outside Washington, D.C., serves as a state-of-the-art facility that tells the story of America’s oldest military branch. The Patriot Staff toured exhibits showcasing the Army’s evolution from its founding in 1775 through its modern-day operations. Interactive displays, historical artifacts, and personal soldier stories allowed the cadets to connect with history in a meaningful way.
One of the highlights of the visit was the “Fighting for the Nation” gallery, which presents key moments in American military history. Cadets were particularly engaged by exhibits on World War II, the Cold War, and the Army’s humanitarian missions. The immersive “Experiential Learning Center” offered hands-on opportunities to apply leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork—skills emphasized in the JROTC program.
For the Patriot Staff, the trip was more than a history lesson; it was a chance to reflect on the Army values of duty, honor, and sacrifice that resonate with their own JROTC mission. It also reinforced the significance of service and leadership in their roles as emerging leaders.
This enriching experience left a lasting impression on the cadets and strengthened their commitment to upholding the principles of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. As they returned to Newport News, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the legacy they are part of.
The Denbigh High School JROTC Patriot Staff extends their gratitude to the National Museum of the United States Army for providing an inspiring and educational day.
