The Junction City High School AJROTC Color Guard presented the colors for Lincoln Elementary School’s ceremony recognizing the Month of the Military Child on April 25th.
The Month of the Military Child was established in 1986 by former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. There are more than 1.6 million military children who face many challenges and unique experiences as a result of their parents’ service. April is the designated month to recognize these children.
Because Junction City is adjacent to Fort Riley, Kansas, many, if not most, of the students in the district are military family members.
The assembly began with the presentation of colors and all students grades Kindergarten through 5th grade reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The Principal then spoke about the challenges of being a military child and concluded with poetry readings by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students and a patriotic song by the 4th grade class.
The JROTC Color Guard was requested my Mrs. Teresa Felton, Head Secretary of Lincoln Elementary who is a former Soldier and Army spouse. “We wanted to do something special for Month of the Military Child for our kids and we’re so glad to have the Cadets present the colors”, said Mrs. Felton.
