GRIFFIN, GA — Over the past several weeks, cadets from the Griffin High School JROTC Program have provided over twelve volunteer hours of manual labor to assist the Griffin Area Habitat for Humanity (GAHFH). Those hours were spent working on an affordable house that would later be given to a qualified family in the local area.

“There are people who are not as fortunate as others. Therefore, we are always looking for opportunities where our cadets can give back to their community in a selfless way”, said Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Nathaniel Flegler Jr., the Senior Army Instructor in charge of the JROTC program at Griffin High School.

The GAHFH consists of community builders, joining hard-working families in need of decent, affordable housing with dedicated volunteers and donors to ensure that every neighbor has a safe, decent place to live.

“I felt really good knowing that I was getting out into the community and helping people in need after all of the tornadoes that caused so much destruction on January 12”, said Cadet Makyla Wendlandt.

“We started working on this house on March 18 and it is great to see the progress we have made in order to help a family move in upon completion”, said Cadets Allont’e Jones and DaShawn Frye. GAHFH was founded in 1989 by Dr. Bill Day and members of First Presbyterian Church in Griffin with the first house built in 1990.  Solely operating in Spalding County, Georgia located within Metro-Atlanta’s 28-county Metropolitan Statistical Area, GAHFH has partnered with over 60 families in building and rehabilitating homes in the Griffin area.
