On February 12, 2023, members of the Garfield HS Army JROTC Color Guard performed the opening ceremony for Students Run LA (SRLA) Hansen Dam 30K Run. The mission of the SRLA is to challenge and encourage at-risk students to experience the benefits of SMART goal setting, character development, adult mentoring, and improved health and nutrition. Moreover, students who engage in the mission of SRLA become a part of a life-changing experience: The rigorous training and completion of the Los Angeles Marathon (26.2 miles). Each year, more than 3,000 students run the marathon and an astonishing 99% of those who start, finish it.
Students that complete the marathon have a high propensity rate of graduating from high school. We are proud to say; Garfield High School’s program has 10-15 students who run the marathon. The Garfield High school Bulldawg Battalion are very honored to partner with Students Run LA and the Los Angeles Marathon. The 30K (18 miles) is a precursor to qualify for the marathon, and our Color Guard, Runners, and Volunteers were very excited to participate in this life changing program. Members of the Color Guard, not only performed in the opening ceremony but also volunteered during and after as part of our dedication to helping the community.
