Fayetteville, NC – Another premier professional in Cumberland County Schools is making a difference in the community and being recognized for ‘going above and beyond.’
During the 2022 CityView Power of Giving Community Impact Awards luncheon at Segra Stadium this afternoon, Retired Sergeant Major (SGM) Ruby Murray, a JROTC instructor at South View High School, was honored for volunteering throughout the community and working to improve the quality of life in Cumberland County.
“As I have grown, I work and continue to ‘give back,'”SGM Murray said from the podium with tears in her eyes. “We have to continue to pay it forward for the sake of someone else and for the sake of others.”
She has taken these words to heart and has logged more than 4,000 hours of community service through her volunteer efforts with different organizations that include Gold Star Moms, the Purple Heart Foundation and Operation Turkey. In April, SGM Murray was awarded President Joe Biden’s prestigious 2021 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest designation of the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.
During the luncheon, SGM Murray shared that she was nominated for the award by her alumni JROTC Cadets. She added that every school year, she stresses to her cadets the importance of ‘giving back’ and being of service to others.
The other Power of Giving Community Impact Award recipients who were honored during the luncheon, which was presented by PWC, included Community members Vera Bell and Lucy and Wes Jones.
