Butler Bulldogs Win the East Surry Raider Competition

On Saturday, 7 October 2023, Butler High School Army JROTC Raiders competed at the annual East Surry Raider Best of the Best (BoB) qualifier in Pilot Mountain, NC. It all started early in the morning with the team meeting at the school to take the final inventory of equipment and personnel before traveling 2 hours to the competition site. As they arrived at the school, they reflected on how training at the Dawg Pound would compare to what they were up against while keeping in mind the strategies and goals they made this year.

The Bulldogs competed in the following events: 5k, Logistical Relay, Team Physical Challenge, Rope-Bridge, and Litter Carry. The first and most strenuous event was the 5K run. Each member heavily relied on each other as they were faced with challenging hills to climb to beat the clock. “Wow” stated Cadet Aycock as he thought walking would ease the tension in his legs. His team members quickly reminded him to push through the pain if they were to complete the race in a reasonable time.

We’re so thankful for the support provided. Parents cheered us on as they competed in every event. Their presence motivated us to do our best and made us see the benefit of what we learned back home. We were determined to crush the rest of the remaining events. This was many of the mixed team members’ first competition as a Raiders. Cadet Prude described his experience, “The experience ignited my passion for excellence”. Another commented “It gave me a purpose to strive to be better, trying to overcome any odds!” said Cadet Amaya. At the end of the Raider meet the Bulldog’s hard work paid off, leading them to be awarded 5 trophies: 1st place in Team Physical Fitness, 1st place in Logistical Relay, 2nd place 5K, 2nd place in Litter Carry, and 1st place overall! The first competition of the season lifted our spirits and gave us the determination to pursue excellence for the rest of the year!!!

Way to show the Butler High School Spirit!!!!
