Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School – Unleashing Potential: The JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson

From May 28 to June 1, 2024, Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Alaska became the crucible of leadership and growth for cadets from six different schools as they participated in the annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC). This year’s event, held primarily in the Camp Carroll area of the joint base, aimed to push cadets both physically and mentally, preparing them for the demands of leadership in challenging environments.

Objective and Activities

Under the expert guidance of LTC Vern Randall, the camp commandant, the challenge adhered to a simple yet profound objective: to build character and foster personal growth among cadets. The physically demanding regimen included drown-proofing, navigating obstacle courses, tackling a 34-foot airborne simulator, a field leadership reaction course, UH60 Flights, and mastering a 50-foot rappel tower. Cadets also participated in daily life at the base, including dining at the Wilderness Inn, the base’s Army Dining Facility (DFAC).

Collaboration and Leadership

The participants came from five Army JROTC programs—Bettye Davis East Anchorage, Bartlett, Dimond, Colony, Bethel—and one Navy program from Service High School, representing three Alaskan school districts.

A significant aspect of JCLC was the emphasis on effective communication and teamwork. Newly appointed leaders from each school were tasked with guiding their teams through the week’s activities, enhancing their ability to work cohesively under pressure.

Support and Impact

Volunteers, predominantly from Colony, played a crucial role in the smooth execution of the challenge. The Alaska National Guard Recruiting Battalion provided substantial support, ensuring the success of the training activities. This collaboration highlighted the community’s investment in the development of its youth, many of whom may not pursue military careers but will carry the lessons learned at JCLC throughout their lives.

Social Elements

The challenge also included lighter moments, such as skits performed by senior cadets parodying their instructors, which served as a bonding experience and brought levity to the rigorous schedule. One notable moment was a Bartlett cadet’s impersonation of a retired Command Sergeant Major, which elicited hearty laughs with the catchphrase, “Not my monkey, not my circus.”

Reflections and Future Directions

The impact of JCLC resonates beyond just the physical activities; it molds character and cultivates a lifelong camaraderie among participants. Cadets left with memorable experiences, new friendships, and a reinforced desire to excel and lead. The program’s success has made it a cornerstone in the JROTC curriculum in the Anchorage Mat-Su area, with plans to further enhance and optimize the experience in coming years.

Major Sidney “Rusty” Topf summed up the sentiment perfectly: “I would have loved to be challenged this much and have half this much fun at summer camp as a kid!” This statement reflects the overarching ethos of JCLC—a rigorous yet enjoyable forge where future leaders are tempered and tested.

The challenge continues to be a beacon of excellence in leadership training, inspiring participants to not only meet the standards but to exceed them, ensuring that each cadet’s potential is fully realized in the process.
