Cadets of the Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School Thunderbird Battalion spent summer vacation time in uniform no-less, “practicing good citizenship and patriotism” as a local business called on them to be part of “Free Flag Handout Day” in Anchorage, Alaska. The Lighting Gallery by Brown’s Electric of Anchorage asked the Corps of Cadets if they would be interested in participating in this annual activity that they sponsor as a community service event in recognition of Independence Day.

Seven Cadets led by their Cadet Battalion Commander Erin Gates, Battalion Executive Officer Elise Stone, and C/1SG Elise Aunoa got themselves back into uniform and reported to the Lighting Gallery of Anchorage along with the local Christian Radio Station 93.7 and handed out flags to the public. Cadets were enjoyed by veterans and patriotic citizens as cars blew horns and cheered passing by the Cadets waiving and saluting with pride.

In addition to the community service activity, three members of the programs Competition Drill Team presented the owner of Brown’s Electric with a thank-you token for supporting the drill team’s accomplishments in attending the Rocky Mountain Western Region Nationals Drill Meet back in April of this year. (See related story “What’s in a Name” May 2022) C/CPT Gates presented Mr. Chip Brown with the crafted and framed thank you on the premises where the Flag Handout took place. The Cadets were very professional and glad to be part of the activity despite the wonderful weather and on their summer vacations. More proof of why fun breaks out wherever Cadets are!
