Indianapolis, IN – [September 6, 2023] – Indiana State Senator Andrea Hunley, took time from her busy schedule to visit Arsenal Technical High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program. In doing so, Senator Hunley reaffirmed her commitment to education and the community. Her experience as a former teacher and public school principal made this visit particularly meaningful because she understands the pivotal role that public schools play in shaping the future of our communities and our nation.
Senator Hunley is no stranger to the military and plays a crucial role in the Indiana Senate. Her expertise has allowed her to advocate effectively for the interests of veterans and military personnel.
Despite her demanding schedule, Senator Hunley found time to engage directly with the Arsenal Technical High School community. During her visit, she had the opportunity to tour “The Barracks,” the ATHS Army JROTC building, and engage with a mixed class of Cadets enrolled in JROTC years I, II, and III.

Senator Hunley expressed her appreciation for the young Cadets by sharing, “This program really is incredible. The young people who I met today are confident and well-spoken. You can tell that they are leaders; it really is impressive.” And to the JROTC and school leadership Senator Hunley remarked, “Thank you for making them strong Hoosiers. We need them here and in Indiana. We need them to continue to support and serve in our community.”
Founded in 1917, the Arsenal Technical High School Junior ROTC program has a strong tradition of instilling leadership, teamwork, and citizenship in its students, making it a perfect match for Senator Hunley’s commitment to education and community development. The visit was an opportunity for Senator Hunley to connect with the youth of her district and witness firsthand the positive impact of programs like JROTC. It also reaffirmed her dedication to ensuring that Indiana’s public schools continue to receive the support they need to provide quality education and opportunities for all students.
“We are honored to have Senator Andrea Hunley visit our school and engage with our exceptional Junior ROTC program,” said Mr. JR Shelt, school principal. “Her commitment to education and her genuine interest in our students’ development are truly commendable. Senator Hunley’s visit has inspired our Cadets, and we are grateful for her support.”
