Shedding Blood for Their Fellow American: Arsenal Technical High School Army JROTC Cadets Partner with American Red Cross to Save Lives
Indianapolis, Indiana — In an inspiring display of compassion and community spirit, members of the Arsenal Technical High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program joined forces with the American Red Cross on Friday, August 25th, 2023, to donate blood for those in need. Located in a low-income area of Indianapolis, Indiana, these exceptional students demonstrated their commitment to making a difference.

To be eligible to donate blood, individuals must be at least 16 years old. This requirement meant that approximately two-thirds of the dedicated Army JROTC Cadets were unable to donate, but that didn’t deter their enthusiasm. Those who couldn’t give blood stepped up to assist with event logistics, including set-up, intake, cleaning, and tear-down. Out of the 48 people who arrived to donate, these remarkable cadets provided a total of 33 units of blood, a contribution that has the potential to save nearly 100 lives. It’s important to note that the blood donated in this community event stays within the local area, ensuring that it directly benefits those in need.

The American Red Cross estimates that someone in the United States requires blood every two seconds, and the state of Indiana has a daily demand for approximately 500 units of blood. This act of generosity by Arsenal Technical High School’s Army JROTC encapsulates the spirit of camaraderie and selflessness that drives these young individuals to take action and make a positive impact on their community.
