GRIFFIN, GA, January 19, 2023 – Cadets from the Griffin High School Army JROTC Program provided service to citizens that were greatly impacted by several devastating tornadoes that swept through the community causing significant damage on January 12. The following day, the cadets partnered with the Griffin Tabernacle of Praise International Church with their disaster relief effort. The cadets helped to distribute hot food plates, food boxes, bottled water and other essential supplies to citizens that were affected by the storms. “I am so proud of our cadets for their commitment to the value of selfless service”, said First Sergeant (Retired) Reginald Gee, Griffin High School JROTC Army Instructor.

Additionally, the cadets joined forces with the American Red Cross and the staff at First Methodist Church on January 14 and yet again, provided emergency support to families in need. “We teach our cadets the value of selfless service in the classroom and to actually see them display that throughout the community for citizens in need is truly amazing” said Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Nathaniel Flegler Jr., the Senior Army Instructor in charge of the Army JROTC program at Griffin High School.

Spalding County was one of the hardest hit areas in the state. Five tornadoes were reported, which destroyed the homes of many residents. “We are humbled and prepared to provide relief services to our fellow residents in Griffin that were impacted by these devastating tornadoes,” said Cadet Adam Smith, Cadet Battalion Commander of the Army JROTC Bear Battalion at Griffin High School.

The Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a program offered to high schools that teaches students character education, student achievement, wellness, and leadership.
