Story and photographs: Wyandanch Cadet Emily Cruz and Cadet Lesly Guevara
Several Wyandanch Army JROTC Cadets recently met and ate lunch with Brigadier General Amanda Azubuike, the Deputy Commanding General of US Army Cadet Command. General Azubuike represents the Army-level headquarters that oversees curriculum and certification for all Army JROTC programs worldwide and was on Long Island visiting the ROTC Battalion at Hofstra University. According to Wyandanch JROTC Senior Instructor Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Zanelotti, it is extremely rare for high school students to meet such a senior-level Army leader. “It speaks to how special these cadets are that they were given an opportunity that many Active Duty soldiers don’t get. I am truly proud of how well they represented themselves, the JROTC program, and the high school.”
General Azubuike spoke about leadership and the importance of selfless service. Her message resonated with the Warrior Cadets, most of whom are preparing for success after high school. “Hearing her speak was very informative,” said Cadet Major Cecilia Lopez, a senior. “It was interesting to get a different perspective on being a leader, and I appreciated it.” This sentiment was echoed by Cadet Captain Naidelin Cu-Lopez. “She showed me how far you can go if you work hard and do your best. I really enjoyed it!”
