Cadet Mallerie Goulding of the Red Hawk Battalion recently experienced one of the nation’s most profound honors when she was selected to lay a wreath at the hallowed Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This prestigious opportunity came as a result of her participation in Jobs for Tennessee Graduates, a program dedicated to helping students develop professional skills and achieve their career goals. Mallerie submitted an essay that stood out among more than 100 applications, demonstrating not only her writing ability but also her deep understanding of service, sacrifice, and the significance of honoring those who gave everything for their country.
The ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery carried special meaning for Mallerie beyond the inherent gravity of the occasion. As she carefully placed the wreath at the tomb, she was following in the footsteps of her grandfather, who had been granted the same honor during his own military service years ago. This generational connection to such a solemn tradition added an extra layer of emotion and significance to the experience, creating a bridge between past and present service members in her family. The weight of that shared history was not lost on her as she stood before one of the nation’s most sacred memorials.
“This was a true honor to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps, who had a chance to place the wreath in his glory days,” said Goulding.
Her words capture the profound sense of continuity and tradition that defines military service across generations. The opportunity not only recognized her individual achievements and dedication but also honored the legacy of service that runs through her family. For Mallerie, the experience served as a powerful reminder of why she chose to serve and the enduring values that connect all those who wear the uniform.
