On Dec. 4, the Howard High School JROTC program visited Lorien Nursing Home as part of its annual Service Learning Project, bringing warmth, music, and connection to the residents. Each company prepared handcrafted gifts to distribute, creating items that were both personal and meaningful to help brighten the holiday season. Cadets expressed pride in their work and the opportunity to give back.

“I had fun getting to put together a craft and performance with my company and getting to show off our work,” said Cadet Ella Leidemer.

During the visit, every company also presented a unique performance to engage the residents. Cadets sang holiday songs, played instruments, and led interactive activities such as bingo, which quickly became a favorite among residents and students alike. The afternoon was filled with music, conversation, and laughter as cadets and residents bonded through shared experiences.

“Lorien is a great experience, something I truly appreciate every year to spend with my company and friends, and motivates me to serve more outside of JROTC,” said Cadet Pelumi Adepoju.

By the end of the visit, the atmosphere at Lorien was full of gratitude and holiday spirit. The experience allowed cadets to develop leadership, communication, and service skills while forming meaningful connections with the residents. The visit stood as a powerful reminder of the impact that kindness and community engagement can have, leaving lasting memories for both the JROTC cadets and the residents they served.
