On May 9th, family, friends, teachers, and community members came together in the Waimea High School cafeteria to celebrate the hard work and leadership of the Menehune Battalion Cadets during the 2024-2025 school year. The event highlighted the achievements of cadets from all grade levels and marked another success-filled year for the battalion.

Throughout the ceremony, Cadets were recognized for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, physical fitness, community service, and for exceptional performance and character. Special guests and local veterans presented medals, ribbons, and certificates to deserving Cadets. The most significant awards included Cadet of the Year, Superior Cadet, and national honors in fitness and distinguished leadership. One meaningful highlight was the presentation of the U.S. Army Special Forces Association Award to Cadet Captain Jardin Chong Tim, for outstanding leadership, dedication, and moral character, by retired “Green Beret” Lieutenant Colonel Pete Tingstrom who flew to Kauai to convey the award in person.

In addition to outstanding Cadets receiving significant awards, the annual battalion change of command ceremony and promotion of the in-bound Battalion Commander (BC), Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Brynn Lee Hirata, were standout moments. In addition to the new BC, the out-going BC, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Kaye Marie Alvarez, and Senior Army Instructor, retired Colonel Vincent Freeman, Jr., delivered moving speeches, which reflected on the Cadets’ efforts and dedication to the program.

This annual Menehune Battalion awards ceremony is an honored tradition that not only celebrates individual success but also signifies the transition of responsibility to next school year’s commander and staff. It highlights the leadership, discipline, and citizenship that students develop throughout the years by increasing capacity and leadership responsibility within the battalion. As the school year wraps up, the Menehune Battalion is already looking forward to more opportunities to grow, lead, and serve the school and community.
