Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Nissi Pula, a leader and role model within Tafuna High School JROTC, proudly represented American Samoa at the prestigious Oceania Rowing Camp 2024 in Australia. As the 2nd Battalion Commander, Nissi is known for setting the example and leading the way, qualities that shone brightly during her international rowing experience. Selected as one of four participants by her coach, Paula Stevenson, Nissi embraced the opportunity with excitement and determination. “I was so excited when I found out I was selected,” she said. “I had a great time learning and gaining more knowledge about rowing.” The camp in Australia provided not only a platform for refining her rowing skills but also a chance to connect with Olympians and athletes from across the Pacific and around the world. The experience culminated in two competitive regattas that tested her skills, endurance, and resilience.
In the first regatta, which took place on rowing machines, Nissi excelled, claiming first place in the girls’ category and helping Team American Samoa secure an impressive second-place finish. The second regatta, held on open water, presented even greater challenges, with rough seas, strong winds, and intense heat.
Despite the physical demands of multiple back-to-back races, Nissi’s determination and focus propelled her to a third-place finish in the girls’ category. “My first race was close because I got stuck at the buoy, but thank goodness the ocean was on my side,” she shared. “I gave it my all, and it was a good race.”
