From June 3 to June 11, 2024, seventeen Menehune Cadets traveled to Normandy, France, for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, becoming the first Hawaii Honor Platoon to represent Hawaii at this historic event. They honored Allied service members by placing leis on the graves of Hawaiian soldiers and later explored Paris, including the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum.

Cadet Rhomsen Fermin shares his experience on the trip. The most memorable moment was honoring fallen soldiers, which made him feel deeply connected to their sacrifice. He found the ceremony recognizing veterans empowering, and while direct interactions with veterans were limited, their passionate speeches were impactful. Discovering cultural differences, like the rarity of rice in France, was surprising and amusing. The trip also strengthened Cadet bonds and leadership skills.

The Normandy trip offered the Cadets valuable historical insights and personal growth. Honoring fallen soldiers and visiting key historical sites deepened their respect for World War II. The experience also enhanced their leadership skills and built lasting friendships, marking a memorable and impactful chapter in their lives.
